The University of Alabama Board of Trustees met on Monday and unanimously approved a contract extension for athletic director Greg Byrne.

Byrne, serving in the role of athletic director since 2017, saw his contract extended by the Compensation Committee on Monday through the end of the 2030-31 academic year. He's scheduled to make just under $15 million over the course of the next eight years.

"Greg's done an incredible job of leading our athletics program since his arrival. Certainly during this time of great changes in our athletic world we're fortunate to have Greg leading our department," said University of Alabama President Stuart Bell. "He is a national voice of reason, judgement and a wonderful leader for our coaches and student athletes."

His tenure at Alabama features the hiring of men's basketball coach Nate Oats, volleyball coach Rashinda Reed, swimming coach Margo Geer, gymnastics coach Ashley Johnston, baseball coach Rob Vaughn, rowing coach Glenn Putyrae, women's tennis coach Jonatan Berhane and most recently football coach Kalen DeBoer.

The university has celebrated two football national championships during his tenure. He's overseen a renovation project inside Bryant-Denny Stadium as well as the implementation of a new playing surface.

His implementation of The Crimson Standard, a 10-year, $600 million capital initiative began the overhaul and renovation of a number of facilities on campus.

Byrne represents the University of Alabama by serving on a number of committees, including theUnited States Olympic & Paralympic Committee Collegiate Advisory Council, the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee, the National Coalition of Minority Football Coaches Coalition Academy as well as served as president of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics in 2020.

Prior to his time in Tuscaloosa he was the athletic director at the University of Arizona and at Mississippi State.

Byrne was recently mentioned as a candidate to take the Texas A&M athletic director position but told Yea Alabama, the NIL entity for UA, that he didn't want to be athletic director for anyone but the University of Alabama.

"Regina and I have felt genuinely supported by President Bell, our trustees, coaches, staff and fan base since the day we arrived seven years ago," Byrne told Yea Alabama. "We are excited about our future."

Texas A&M hired Trev Alberts as its new athletic director last Wednesday.
