Jalen Hurts Signs Five-Year Extension with Philadelphia Eagles

Hurts becomes the highest-paid player in NFL history with the extension.

NFL quarterback Jalen Hurts became the highest-paid player in NFL history on Monday morning, with the former Alabama/Oklahoma signal caller reaching a five-year, $255 million extension with the Philadelphia Eagles.

$179.304 million of the deal is guaranteed. It also includes a no-trade clause — the first in Eagles franchise history.

The 24-year-old finished the 2022-23 season as the runner-up for the AP NFL MVP award. Hurts also shattered several in-game and seasonal franchise records throughout the Eagles journey to Super Bowl LVII.

Extending Hurts should increase Philadelphia's chances of making it back to the big game exponentially. The dual-threat threw for the 10th-most yards and ran for the second-most touchdowns. He also finished fourth in the NFL in passer rating with a 101.5.

However, Hurts will face some obstacles as Philadelphia lost Pro Bowl running back Miles Sanders to the Panthers this offseason. The addition of Seahawks running back Rashaad Penny could fill that hole, but Hurts will likely need to flash his arm a little more next season to hoist the Lombardi Trophy.

One major contributor for the new goal is fellow Crimson Tide product wide receiver DeVonta Smith. The 2020 Heisman Trophy winner caught a wide receiver franchise record of 88 passes last season and set a rookie team record the year before with 916 receiving yards.

Eagles offensive guard Landon Dickerson has also made heavy contributions to Hurts' success. The Crimson Tide product earned his first Pro Bowl selection in 2022-23 for creating large gaps for Hurts and Sanders to break records through.

Hurts may be the highest-paid player in the history of the NFL, but knowing his competitive edge, a ring is his real goal.
