Hagan Banks to Miss Remainder of Season

Alabama pitcher Hagan Banks will undergo surgery and miss the rest of the year.

Alabama right-handed pitcher Hagan Banks will undergo surgery on his arm next week and will miss the remainder of the year.

Crimson Tide head coach Rob Vaughn confirmed the news in his post-game press conference on Thursday night after the Crimson Tide defeated South Carolina 4-3.

“People probably saw last week Hagan Banks come out of that game. He went and saw a doc this week, he is getting looked at. He’s going to have surgery next week,” said Vaughn. “The good news is it wasn’t a full tear, it’s not a reconstruction or anything, he’ll be ready for the start of next season which is huge. Hagan competed so hard for us and it just got to a point where he was two weeks on, a week off, two weeks off, get back for a game and it got bad again, so finally getting fixed. Kind of like RQ, he’ll be with us for the rest of the way.”

Banks made his season debut on Feb. 16 against Manhattan College out of the bullpen, however missed three weeks due to an undisclosed reason. He was on a pitch count in his Sunday starts against Lipscomb and Tennessee and exited the series finale against Georgia in the second inning with apparent arm discomfort.

“Really excited that he is going to come back feeling good, that’s the good news of this whole thing, even though we’ll be without him the rest of the year,” said Vaughn.

The junior is the second starting pitcher to suffer a season ending surgery this year. Riley Quick underwent Tommy John surgery in February.
