Tim Keenan's Development Opening Up New Defensive Possibilities for Alabama

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — One of the biggest surprises on Alabama's stout defense in 2023 has been the development and emergence of interior defensive lineman Tim Keenan III.
The Birmingham native saw limited playing time in his first two years on campus, but in his redshirt sophomore season he's become a mainstay and starter on the Crimson Tide defensive front.
On the season, Keenan has totaled 20 tackles and a sack, and has been a huge part in Alabama's ability to pressure opposing quarterbacks all season long.
"He's played very, very well," Alabama head coach Nick Saban told reporters on Wednesday afternoon. "He's been very productive. [He's] smart, very dependable. You can always count on him to do his job, he works hard, gives great effort."
Keenan has taken over the starting position at nose guard, the most interior defensive lineman on the front. His play has allowed Alabama to move last season's starting nose guard, Jaheim Oatis, to other positions where he can also thrive.
"Jaheim [Oatis] played nose last year, so [Keenan's] emergence as a good inside player, a good nose, lets us play Jaheim at 5-technique, and the two of them play inside when we go to four down guys," Saban said. "It's given us a lot of diversity in how we can use other players."
Even despite not seeing the field much at all in his early years with the team — he only appeared in one game prior to this season — Saban commended his work ethic throughout his time in Tuscaloosa.
"He's kind of made himself into a player here," Saban said. "He's worked his way up so that he's a very, very productive player. He could have done what some other guys do and say, 'I'm not going to play that much, I'm not going to work that hard,' but this guy has worked hard for every minute since he's been here to get where he's at and it's paying off for him."
