Baylor’s Matt Jones Calls Out Texas Tech’s ‘Fake Fans’ After Win in Lubbock

Baylor Bears junior linebacker Matt Jones talks Texas Tech fans, turnovers and keys to victory in Lubbock

With the Baylor football team picking up the school’s first road win in Lubbock since 1990, Bears junior linebacker Matt Jones didn’t hold back when asked about breaking that streak.

Especially when asked about silencing the Texas Tech crowd on Saturday night.

“It was awesome,” Jones said. “I remember seeing them just leaving early, even when they had a chance. Just seeing them leave early, I guess you could call them some fake fans but it was just nice.”

So what did Jones think of the crowd noise in Lubbock compared to, say, the game in Provo, Utah?

“I thought BYU was more electric, more intensified,” Jones said. “I didn’t think their [Texas Tech’s] fans or crowd really brought it like we were expecting. I think we had high expectations as to what we were going to expect coming into the game with the crowd and how it could be a distraction, but I don’t think it really distracted us one bit.”

It certainly didn’t seem to, as Jones and the Bears crushed the Red Raiders 45-17.

“The motto going into this game was execute from the start,” Jones said. “Start fast, play green. I feel like we went out there and we executed from the start. We were more physical, we were just playing from whistle to whistle, playing smart, doing our job. Everyone was doing their job, communication was on point, and we just went to our expectations and executed.”

The difference between this game and the West Virginia game, according to Jones, was Baylor’s ability to run the ball consistently throughout the contest.

“I think just pounding the rock,” Jones said. “We came in the locker room and just preached like hey this game’s not over and just from the West Virginia game, the past experiences, we knew that we had to come back into this half and pound the rock and out-physical them, out-effort them, fly to the ball and let every snap be our best snap.”

That game plan worked to perfection, as a solid second half sealed a Baylor victory in Lubbock for the first time in 32 years.

“We came into this game with a great game plan, something we haven’t run all year,” Jones said. “So I think installing that throughout the week and executing at a high level and just practicing with full effort every day and having intentional reps, it just led over to the game.”
