Peter Schrager: NY Jets 'Loved' Coaching Desmond Ridder at 2022 Senior Bowl

The quarterback was the best passer in the annual showcase game.

CINCINNATI — The race to be the first quarterback selected in the 2022 NFL Draft is still anyone's game. Former Bearcats quarterback Desmond Ridder is only being selected in about 30% of first-round mock drafts right now, but he's made an impressive impact on NFL coaches over the past few months.

Fox Sports NFL insider Peter Schrager joined the Bill Simmons Podcast this week and discussed Ridder's impressive intangibles.

"The guy that actually impressed a lot, and he didn't become a top-10 pick, is the quarterback out of Cincinnati, Ridder, Desmond Ridder," Schrager said on the show. "Who has 44 career college wins, third-most all-time. Who also ran a sub-five 40, who also showed improvement in his technique from when he played at Cincinnati to the combine. Which means he's already working with a quarterback trainer."

Ridder and Jordan Palmer have been hard at work improving mechanics, but the leader brings other things to the table that you can't teach.

"'I'm friendly with a lot of the Jets coaches," Schrager continued. "They had him at the Senior Bowl and the story I got. It could be elaborated or not. The story we got is that in the Senior Bowl they're losing, and it's like the final drive of the game—the Senior Bowl—an exhibition game on a Saturday, and Desmond Ridder looks at the coaching staff and says, 'I got this guys,' and takes them right down the field and scores. and all the Jets guys were like, 'I love that guy.'"

Ridder flashed a lot of impressive attributes in his QB-best Senior Bowl outing. He finished 4-of-6 for 68 yards and two touchdowns passing along with three carries for 14 yards rushing. He is the consensus fifth-best QB on big boards, but it only takes one team falling in love with him to be the first passer selected.
