Report: Powerful Group Trying to Reshape College Football, Eliminate Traditional Conference Structure

This could be really cool.

CINCINNATI —  Powerful names are trying to make a big change to college football.

The Athletic's Andrew Marchand and Stewart Mandel report a group called "College Sports Tomorrow" is attempting to rally 70 power conference schools (all five current members of the old five-conference model, plus new ACC entry SMU and Notre Dame) to form a football super league.

The 20-person group, including No. 2 NFL executive Brian Rolapp, and Philadelphia 76ers owner David Blitzer, wants the whole of FBS to restructure into a tier system that permanently entrenches the 70 power schools (Cincinnati included) in the top tier, with a 10-team relegation tier for the remaining non-power FBS programs.

Those programs would be relegated up and down between Tier 2 and 3, similar to European soccer, with the power schools never moving into the second tier.

The postseason would then branch off with the eight-division winners and the eight second-place teams making up a 16-team playoff. It's a bold idea that college administrators aren't jumping all over due to TV contracts and other reasons.

Check out the rest of the deep dive here as another chance to modernize college athletics and fix the broken NIL system surfaces.
