Maryland hoops resurgence triggered by hometown talent's newfound three-point prowess

Rodney Rice transferred to Maryland after a forgettable season at Virginia Tech that saw him average under eight points per game. He only played in eight games before stepping away from the Hokies program for personal reasons. Rice then returned home, committing to Coach Kevin Willard and the Maryland Terrapins. The return to familiar surroundings has done wonders for the 6-4 combo shooting guard. His overall shooting percentage since the transfer has skyrocketed by 12 percent, he's averaging 12.2 points per game, and his prowess from the three-point line has opened up the middle for freshman phenom Derek Queen to dominate. The threat of Rice from downtown limits teams' ability to double Queen.

Rice has connected on at least one three-point basket in 15 of the 17 Terps games this year. This consistent threat has helped the Maryland basketball team to 13 wins and a .500 record in a Big Ten conference loaded with skilled teams.
Heading into the Northwestern game, the Terps look to control their own destiny in terms of seeding within the Big Ten tourney and the NCAA Tournament in March. Guys like Rice, Queen, and [Ja'Kobie] Gillespie will play huge roles in how this season shapes up for the Terrapins. They have exceeded expectations to this point and show little sign of slowing down anytime soon.
