Mark Fletcher Jr. Cements His Miami Legacy in Historic Performance Against North Carolina

The decorated Miami Hurricanes record books have been re-written by one of South Florida's own.

In this story:

Mark Fletcher Jr. etched his name at the top of the Miami Hurricanes record books on Saturday, scoring his 36th total touchdown in the Hurricanes’ Halloween matchup against North Carolina.

He has officially passed Stephen McGuire and Edgerrin James for the program’s career touchdown mark.

Fletcher, the senior running back from Fort Lauderdale, entered the game with 35 career total touchdowns (33 rushing, 2 receiving), tied with the two past great Hurricanes players. His 31-yard receiving touchdown in the second quarter against the Tar Heels lifted him to 36 total touchdowns, making him the sole leader in Miami history.

McGuire (1989-92) and James (1996-98) had previously shared the mark with 35 apiece.

Fletcher’s touchdown came from a screen pass to the boundary as Miami had excellent blocking that led to the explosive play.

He only had two receiving touchdowns in his career. This third one against North Carolina makes it a memorable one.

Entering Saturday, he had 414 rushing yards and seven touchdowns while helping the Hurricanes become one of the best offenses in the country. Fletcher added to that total.

He rushed for 43 yards and scored twice on the ground. Fletcher tied McGuire's record for the most rushing touchdowns in program history at 35.

With one more rushing touchdown, Fletcher will be the all-time leader in that category for Miami.

The night was a fitting chapter in a story defined by loyalty and resilience. Fletcher, a consensus four-star recruit out of American Heritage, has stayed at Miami through every season of his career, which is a rarity in the transfer-portal era.

After starring in the Hurricanes’ 2025 College Football Playoff run (where he set a CFP record with 507 rushing yards across four games, including a career-high 172 against Texas A&M), he chose to return for his senior year rather than enter the NFL Draft.

Coaches and teammates have long called him the team’s emotional leader, including head coach Mario Cristobal. He has repeatedly described him as the “heart and soul” of the program, citing his consistency, accountability, and more.

The Fort Lauderdale native has been a cornerstone of Miami’s program throughout his four seasons. Fletcher was instrumental in getting Miami back into relevance and back into their winning culture.

Saturday’s record-breaking performance against a great defense, coached by one of the greatest coaches of all time, is a fitting way to cement his place among the program’s greats.

He has been the heartbeat of a program that flipped the script, turning years of frustration into a return to the Hurricanes’ winning identity.

With several games remaining, including next week’s road trip to Notre Dame, Fletcher’s senior campaign continues to build on an already impressive résumé.

In an era of constant roster turnover, the local product has chosen to write his story entirely in orange and green, right in his backyard.

Saturday night in Chapel Hill simply made his career even clearer: Mark Fletcher Jr.’s name now sits at the top of one of Miami’s most cherished record books, making him one of the greatest to ever put on the uniform.
