Michigan State football is going after a pretty big fish on the recruiting trail.

The Spartans are set to host five-star Brother Rice (Ill.) EDGE defender Kameron McGee on Thursday during the team's eighth spring practice of the year. McGee announced on social media that he would be coming to East Lansing from Chicago on Tuesday morning.

McGee is one of the very best prospects in the 2028 class. He's ranked 20th overall in the class on the 247Sports Composite rankings, which places him fourth among EDGE rushers and second among all prospects from Illinois.

The list of offers McGee has is already very, very prestigious. He has the interest of Notre Dame, Texas, Oregon, Ohio State, LSU, Michigan, Georgia, Indiana, Alabama, and Florida, just to name a few. It's basically a "who's who" of college football, so getting enough interest from McGee to take an unofficial visit is still a relatively impressive job by fellow Chicagoan Pat Fitzgerald and his staff.

McGee Adds to Class

McGee's high school, Brother Rice in Chicago, is one of the schools the Spartans would like to establish a pipeline with. Rivals ranks the Crusaders, who went 13-1 this season, 71st in the country and second among Illinois high schools. MaxPreps has them 88th in the nation and second in the state, too.

Chicago as a whole is a place where Michigan State wants to establish roots. It's only natural, given that the head coach is from there and has been recruiting players and building relationships with high school coaches for decades. Fitzgerald has been outspoken about prioritizing in-state recruits, but you also have to look outside your own state's borders these days. Chicago is one of the best places to look.

As of now, MSU doesn't currently have any commitments in its 2028 class. It's pretty rare for a prospect currently in his sophomore year of high school to be committed already, anyway. The Spartans are still only in the early stages of building their 2027 class. They currently have four commitments in the '27 class.

Those commitments currently include: Brighton (Mich.) offensive tackle Jack Carlson (No. 472 overall, 247Sports Composite), East Grand Rapids (Mich.) interior offensive lineman Grant Adloff (No. 647 overall), Big Walnut (Ohio) quarterback Eli Stumpf (No. 891 overall), and then Massillon Washington running back Savior Owens (No. 966 overall).
