All-American Bowl: East Team Day Three Recap - Notre Dame Signees

Wednesday was a big day for all the players participating in the 2023 All-American Bowl. Both the East and West squads had morning practices separately to continue learning from the coaches at the event and competing against the best of the best in the 2023 recruiting class. Each team both traveled to the Alamodome in the afternoon for a joint practice to further test their skills.

The morning practice on Thursday was a much different vibe for the East squad. The players spent their time focusing on the finer points of the game plan and expectations. The team was just in helmets and went through the practice half speed for the most part. It was about special teams, alignment and assignment, focused on getting everyone on the same page.

That limited massive takeaways from the practice specifically. Truthfully this walk through session was needed. When speaking to several players, including Notre Dame defensive end signee Brenan Vernon, the team was sore from the previous day of festivities. Still, both future Notre Dame players a part of the East practice, both Vernon and safety signee Adon Shuler, have both made a massive impression this week.

The future of Notre Dame football is extremely bright.

DE BRENAN VERNON

Vernon came into the All-American Bowl about 20 pounds slimmer than what he played at during his senior season. Now a slender 260 pounds, the Ohio native has looked considerably more explosive and twitchy throughout the week thus far. He also does the little things you would expect, playing with good pad level and violent hands to lock out.

It has been his growth as a pass rusher that has been a great sign over the last couple of days. There are many instances where if Vernon doesn’t win off of his initial move, he can get stuck a bit. He currently has a bull rush and double swipe in his arsenal that have been successful this week. Vernon has done a better job the last couple of days of rushing with a purpose, which has been great to see.

Seeing Vernon without pads on gives you a great appreciation for his potential future development. If he is able to fill out his frame adequately, he will be a headache to counteract both outside and in.

S ADON SHULER

This has almost felt like a business trip of sorts for Shuler. He has played and learned with purpose all week. There has been an attention to detail for the New Jersey native that can not be understated.

Even during the workout, you could see that Shuler was a sponge going through the defense. The football intelligence part of a player’s game is something that is tough to quantify at times. For Shuler, it is an area that he excels in.

Athletically, he looks the part of any defensive back in attendance. Shuler is also a well built player who clearly is laser focused on his development. Coming into the week, everyone expected Shuler to be physical, and he is. Seeing Shuler look comfortable working from depth, however, is a pleasant surprise.
