In this story:

The Oklahoma Sooners have announced a slight change of plans for the beginning of the 2027 season.

OU will now open the 2027 campaign a week earlier, on Saturday, Aug. 28, against Utah State. The original date put the Sooners’ opening game on Sept. 4.

Oklahoma will also move its neutral-site match with ACC foe SMU to Sept. 4. The game was originally set for Sept. 11. It will still take place at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys. The Sooners are 6-2 in that venue, having won five straight in Arlington.

That game will be the second of a two-game series that began in 2023, when OU defeated SMU 28-11 in Norman.

It appears that the Sooners’ have made a change to their third scheduled non-conference opponent, the San Diego State Aztecs. The official announcement from the University of Oklahoma mentioned now have "one non-conference opening on their 2027 slate."

OU signed a three-game series deal with San Diego State in October of 2022. The series was originally penned to take place in 2027 (Norman), 2029 (San Diego) and 2031 (Norman).

There’s no word yet on whether the entire series has been canceled, moved entirely, or if only the 2027 game has been nixed.

The SEC mandated that each member school must schedule and play at least one opponent from one of the Power Four conferences. SMU is Oklahoma's Power Four opponent for 2027.

Recently, the school announced the addition of Missouri State to its 2028 schedule. As of now, OU has four non-conference opponents in 2028 — their Power Four opponent will be a neutral-site game against the Houston Cougars of the Big 12.

This does not guarantee that OU will play all four non-conference games in 2028. According to reporting from FBSchedules, one of the games between Temple and Colorado State may be dropped, with financial reasons playing an influential role in the ultimate decision.

If that comes to pass, it helps support the idea of Oklahoma dropping their series with San Diego State.

OU will continue to play nine conference opponents in 2027. Oklahoma will host Alabama, Arkansas, Missouri and Tennesee. They will go on the road to face Auburn, LSU, Ole Miss and Vanderbilt —which will mark the first time in school history the Sooners have taken on the Commodores.
