Recruiting Notebook: Elite Freshman DL Adds Pitt Offer

PITTSBURGH -- With the 2022 season over, the Pitt Panthers are well into the portion of their calendar dedicated to recruiting. Fresh off a dramatic win in the Sun Bowl, Pitt is hitting the recruiting trail hard.

A freshman defensive lineman had already racked up nine Division I offers from the likes of LSU, Penn State, Tennessee, Georgia and more and Pitt is the latest addition to his offer sheet. Preston Carey, a 6'4, 280-pound rusher from St. Anthony's High School on Long Island, New York, is the latest to become a Panthers target.

The Panthers have continued to recruit the ranks of Florida high school powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas heavily. Pitt is in contact with a few players from that school and their latest offer went to 2025 linebacker Martin Rhyne. It's his first Power 5 offer. Kentucky was in to offer shortly after.

Stephen Thompson graduated with a bachelor's degree in communications and political science from Pitt in April 2022 after spending four years as a sports writer and editor at The Pitt News, the University of Pittsburgh's independent, student-run newspaper. He primarily worked the Pitt men's basketball beat, and filled in on coverage of football, volleyball, softball, gymnastics and lacrosse, in addition to other sports as needed. His work at The Pitt News has won awards from the Pennsylvania News Media Association and Associated College Press.
