Baseball: Frogs Open Weekend Series Against Kansas with a Win

In a come-from-behind effort, TCU escaped Friday night with an 8-6 win over conference foe Kansas to improve to 13-9 on the year.

The starter for the Frogs was a former Jayhawk in Ryan Vanderhei, who gave up five runs in 4.1 innings of work. He was able to strike out five Jayhawks, but also walked four and gave up six hits.

The winning pitcher for TCU was Garrett Wright, who finished off the eighth inning before the Frogs scored two in the bottom half to take an 8-6 lead.

After Kansas jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, Elijah Nunez evened the score with an RBI double in the bottom half of the inning. Kansas scored again in the top of the third taking a 2-1 lead, and Cole Fontenelle tied it back up in the bottom of the fourth with an opposite-field solo home run.

The back-and-forth contest continued as Kansas jumped out to a 5-2 lead on a three-run homer down the right field line from DH Janson Reeder. That was when Kirk Sarloos decided to pull Vanderhei.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Frogs scored four runs to take a 6-5 lead. Nunez hit his second RBI double of the game, this time to left field that scored two runs. Nunez then scored on a throwing error by the second basemen and Tre Richardson knocked in Luke Boyers to make it 6-5.

After Kansas tied the game again in the top of the eighth, Richardson and Fontenelle were both able to knock in a run to bring the game to its final score of 8-6 Frogs.

Kole Klecker gets the ball tomorrow afternoon looking to clinch the series for TCU. First pitch is at 2 p.m. from Lupton Stadium.
