UCLA Football: DeShaun Foster Unpacks 6 Positions He Wants To Improve Via Transfer Portal

The spring football transfer portal officially opened on Monday, and UCLA football head coach DeShaun Foster is looking to add talent to the roster. The portal is open for 15 days, until the beginning of May.

While the transfer portal was previously open during the winter, Foster did not have the opportunity to bring on transfer additions during that time due to the late offseason exit of former head coach Chip Kelly. This will be Foster's first time getting to utilize the portal since taking over as head coach.

At spring practice this past weekend, Foster told reporters that he primarily wants to add transfer additions across six different positions.

“I have six positions I want to address,” Foster said to reporters. “And then best available [talent] after that.” Foster ticked off offensive line, defensive line, tight end, defensive back and possibly running back and quarterback when asked which positions he would like to bolster. The spring transfer options usually are not as robust as they are in the winter because many players on the move this time of year are seeking more playing time after having been beaten out for a starting spot."

Adding more players at these positions will be crucial for the Bruins, who lost several key contributors during the transfer portal last winter, including quarterback Dante Moore, wide receiver Kam Brown, safety Kamari Ramsey, defensive back John Humphrey, offensive lineman Jake Wiley among others.

The good news for the Bruins' recruiting through the portal is that Foster and the new staff have put in plenty of effort toward improving their recruiting process. Foster has established a key relationship with Men of Westwood, the main NIL collective for the UCLA football and men's basketball. These efforts will ideally allow the Bruins to bring in several players from the portal over the next two weeks.
