UCLA Football: This Element Of Ethan Garbers' Process Impresses DeShaun Foster

The preparation process of presumed starting UCLA Bruins quarterback Ethan Garbers is already impressing his new head coach, writes Ben Bolch of The Los Angeles Times.

“He’s constantly trying to get knowledge,” first-year head coach DeShaun Foster, fromerly the team's running backs coach under Chip Kelly, said. “He’s a very smart kid. He loves the game, that’s why he works so hard at it. So I’m just glad he’s here and playing well.”

So does this rave review necessarily mean that Garbers is locked-in as the Blue and Gold's starting signal caller heading into the 2024 season? Not per se. Foster has hinted that the job is officially open, though it sure seems like it's Garbers' to lose.

The other two quarterbacks who started at least one game for the Bruins last year, true freshman Dante Moore and junior Collin Schlee, have both since entered the NCAA transfer portal and will be taking snaps elsewhere next fall.

Garbers, a 6'3", 210-pound Newport Beach native, passed for 1,136 yards and 11 touchdowns (against three interceptions) last season, while posting a 75.1 quarterback rating. With Garbers primarily at the helm, UCLA went 8-5 and won its LA Bowl bout against the Boise State Broncos, 35-22.
