UCLA Men's Basketball: Former Bruin's Family Reacts To Trade

Is it truly just business?

Former UCLA guard Jrue Holiday made headlines this week for his trades to the Portland Trail Blazers and the Boston Celtics in short order.

Many speculated what type of fit he'd be on his new team, but Holiday's wife Lauren shared her thoughts that such moves in sports are bigger than basketball.

The Holidays moved from their long-time post in New Orleans to the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2021 offseason as the critical piece to a championship contender.

Throughout the 2021 playoffs, the UCLA guard played a vital role as a gritty defender and tricky playmaker as the starting point guard to the eventual NBA champions in his first season with the team.

Holiday felt such a commitment from the organization grow even further after he inked a four-year extension after the team gave up significant draft capital for his services during the 2021 season.

Two seasons later, that connection that became so strong came crashing down to earth after two early playoff exits highlighted by Holiday's poor showing on offense.

Milwaukee moved swiftly by trading Holiday to Portland for their franchise icon Damian Lillard, all while Jrue reportedly was taking a nap.

Tough decisions like these remind fans of the human side of athletes in these trades and how families can be uprooted within an instant.

Community work and family values have always been the topics of discussion whenever the Holidays are mentioned among league circles.

The darker side of the NBA means that such high character often gets outweighed by the upside a possibly better asset could provide a team.

Holiday ended up in another similarly great situation with the Celtics, but the choices around his family meant thinking about more than simply basketball.
