Chicago White Sox Claim Former Marlins Outfielder Peyton Burdick Off Waivers

Former Miami Marlins outfielder Peyton Burdick is headed from the Baltimore Orioles to the Chicago White Sox, who placed pitcher Matt Foster on the injured list.

The Chicago White Sox have claimed outfielder Peyton Burdick off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles, the team announced Friday afternoon.

To make room for Burdick, Chicago placed right-handed pitcher Matt Foster on the 60-day injured list. Foster, who underwent Tommy John surgery in April 2023, is still in the midst of his rehabilitation process and now won't be eligible to return until April 23 at the earliest.

Burdick was a member of the Orioles for a mere five days. Baltimore traded cash considerations to the Miami Marlins on Feb. 14 in order to land him, but designated the outfielder for assignment on Feb. 19 after acquiring relief pitcher Kaleb Ort.

The Marlins, who drafted Burdick in the third round of the 2019 MLB Draft, designated him for assignment on Feb. 9 when they added starting pitcher Darren McCaughan in a trade with the Seattle Mariners.

Burdick made his MLB debut in 2022 and returned to the big leagues for another brief stretch in 2023. In 46 career major league appearances with Miami, Burdick is a .200 hitter with five home runs, 13 RBI, a .649 OPS and a -0.2 WAR.

Down in the minors, meanwhile, Burdick is a .235 hitter with an .810 OPS. He has racked up 39 home runs, 133 RBI and 25 stolen bases in 221 games at the Triple-A level.

In 2020 and 2021, MLB Pipeline ranked Burdick as the No. 14 prospect in the Marlins' farm system. He earned the No. 10 spot in 2022, just before he graduated.

Burdick, who turns 27 years old on Monday, is now part of a White Sox organization that has made an effort to build out outfield depth over the past few weeks. Chicago made trades for Zach DeLoach and Dominic Fletcher back on Feb. 3.
