The Tampa Bay Rays have designated right-handed pitcher Javy Guerra for assignment, the team announced Wednesday. The Rays have recalled right-hander Calvin Faucher from Triple-A Durham to take Guerra's spot on the active roster.

Guerra appeared in nine games for the Rays this season, putting up a 4.08 ERA, nine strikeouts and 13 walks in 11.0 innings of work. Tampa Bay traded for Guerra on April 29, sending a player to be named later to Milwaukee to acquire the 27-year-old pitcher.

On Tuesday night, Guerra allowed three earned runs in 2.0 innings in the Rays' 5-3 loss at the hands of the Texas Rangers.

Faucher, meanwhile, has pitched in 13 games with four starts for the Rays this season, putting up a 5.21 ERA and 1.579 WHIP. Last year, Faucher made 22 appearances, going 1-2 with a 5.48 ERA and 1.688 WHIP out of Tampa Bay's bullpen.

Guerra was one of the prospects the Boston Red Sox traded to the San Diego Padres to acquire All-Star closer Craig Kimbrel in November 2015. Guerra was a shortstop at the time, and he wouldn't become a pitcher until 2019.

Later that year, Guerra got called up to the majors for the first time. Guerra spent parts of the next three-and-a-half seasons with the Padres, going 1-0 with an 8.46 ERA and 1.880 WHIP across 27.2 innings at the major league level.

The Rays purchased Guerra's contract in April 2022, and he went 2-1 with a 3.38 ERA across 17 appearances in Tampa Bay that season.

Guerra got dealt to the Brewers for a player to be named later in November 2022, only to return to the Rays a few months later in exchange for another player to be named later. Tampa Bay designated Guerra for assignment in May, although he cleared waivers and accepted an assignment to the minors.

Now, Guerra is off of Tampa Bay's 40-man roster again, subject to either another trade, another trip around the waiver wire or another stint in Triple-A.

The Rays are scheduled to close out their three-game series against the Rangers at 2:05 p.m. on Wednesday. Zack Littell will draw the start for Tampa Bay, while Jon Gray will start for Texas.
