CIF Southern Section announces high school playoffs will return for basketball, baseball and other season 2 sports

After canceling the playoffs for Season 1 sports in January, the Southern Section announced that there will be a postseason for Season 2 sports in a release on Monday.

High school playoffs are back in the CIF Southern Section.

After canceling the playoffs for Season 1 sports in January, the Southern Section announced on Monday that there will be a postseason for some Season 2 sports, including boys and girls basketball.

Section officials are still working with local health agencies to allow for championships in individual sports.

Here is the full list of Season 2 sports that the Southern Section is planning to hold a postseason for:

• Baseball, softball, boys and girls basketball, boys volleyball, boys and girls lacrosse, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls team tennis and boys and girls dual meet wrestling.

Here is the full list of Season 2 sports that the Section is working with local health agencies to secure approval to have championships:

• Boys and girls golf, boys and girls swimming and diving, boys and girls individual tennis and boys and girls track and field.

Championships for boys and girls individual wrestling have been canceled. Individual wrestling is classified as a high-contact indoor sport and no matches have taken place this year.

The reason the Southern Section still has to work to get the approval from health authorities for individual sports championships is because currently having athletes from all eight counties within the Section footprint meet for a championship is against California health regulations.

The California Department of Public Health released updated youth sports guidance last Wednesday that paved the way for the Southern Section to hold postseason play for team sports.

An announcement on CIF State playoffs and regional championships for Season 2 sports will come either the last week of April or the first week of May, according to CIF Executive Director Ron Nocetti. The CIF State office will wait until every Section has announced whether they will have playoffs before making a determination on state playoffs and regional championships.

The CIFSS is still working on dates, times and locations for all playoff events. Those details will be released soon.
