GAME 1: Campolindo 70 San Ysidro 58 (National Division)
Campolindo jumped out to a 10-2 lead over San Ysidro and led the Cougars 37-26 at halftime. San Ysidro made a run in the third quarter, briefly cutting the lead to seven before Campolindo responded with a run of their own and pushed the lead to 18 points before cruising to a 70-58 victory.
Campolindo knocked down seven three pointers and had four players finish in double led by Shane O’Reilly’s 21 points. Martin Flores led San Ysidro with a game-high 22 points.
GAME 2: St. Mary’s (Arizona) 73 Torrey Pines 56 (National Division)
Sophomore point guard Styles Phipps scored the first six points of the game and helped St. Mary’s grab a 26-16 lead over Torrey Pines after one quarter on Tuesday. The Knights locked in defensively in the second quarter and shutout out the Falcons for the entire quarter to head into the break with a 38-16 lead.
“After the loss we got down on ourselves, but we didn’t think about it too much and came out strong,” Phipps said after finishing with a game-high 29 points.
Senior center Jeremiah Cherry added 25 points for St. Mary’s, allowing the Knights to cruise through the second half for a 73-56 win over the host Falcons.
“Play hard, play together and just keep winning,” Phipps said of St. Mary’s mindset for the final two games of the tournament.
GAME 3: St. Augustine 55 Mira Costa 51 (National Division)
Mira Costa and St. Augustine played an even first ten minutes on Tuesday before the Mustangs pulled away, ending the first half on a 12-2 run that saw them take a 31-21 lead into the break. The shorthanded Saints, missing four starters, won the third quarter 20-10 to tie the game at 41 as they headed to the final quarter.
The Saints began the fourth quarter on an 8-0 run and held off Mira Costa to seize the 55-51 victory.
St. Augustine juniors Derrius Carter-Holinger and Jurian Dixon combined to score 31 of the Saints’ 34 second half points to help the Saints to their first win of the week.
Dixon finished with a game-high 23 points while Carter-Holinger scored 12 of his 14 points in the third quarter. Mira Costa senior Cole Slusser led the Mustangs with 15 points.
GAME 4: Archbishop Mitty 51 Lincoln (Stockton) 49, OT (National Division)
After trailing by a point at halftime, Archbishop Mitty struggled in the third quarter and suddenly founds themselves trailing by 11 points as they began the fourth quarter in Tuesday’s game.
The Monarchs quickly got to work in the final quarter and after connecting on four three-pointers were able to tie the game at 42 with two minutes left to play. Both teams traded baskets in the final two minutes and were locked at 44 heading into the overtime period.
Archbishop Mitty got a three-pointer from Isaiah Cabebe to once again tie the game and called timeout following a defensive stop to draw up a final shot. Senior guard Aidan Burke drove into the key as both the shot clock and game clock wound down and finished a reverse layup with just over three seconds left to play.
“We were trying to run a different play for an easy layup,” Burke said. “But he was overplaying us, and I saw that there was five seconds left so I decided to go to the basket.”
Lincoln immediately called timeout to draw up their own last shot and went the length of the court but couldn’t get the layup to fall as the buzzer sounded, handing Archbishop Mitty a win in the National Division quarterfinals.
“At halftime we talked about that we need to come back together and talk on defense a lot more,” Burke said of the adjustments that spurred the Monarch’s comeback. “I feel like once we started doing that in the second half it helped a lot.”
Burke was the only Mitty player in double digits, finishing with a game-high 24 points. Andre Warren led Lincoln with 12 points.
GAME 5: Faith Family (Texas) 77 Hillcrest 55 (National Division)
Deshawn Gorey kept Hillcrest in the game early, scoring the first 13 points of the game for the Trojans, helping them take a 16-14 first quarter lead over Faith Family. Hillcrest briefly exteneded the lead to seven points in the second quarter before losing junior seven-footer Dennis Evans to a head injury.
Faith Family took advantage of Evans’ absence in the middle and roared back to tie the game at 32 at halftime. The Eagles offense hit their stride in the second half, scoring 45 points in the final two frames and pulled away from Hillcrest for a 77-55 victory.
Sophomore Deshawn Gorey led Hillcrest with 24 points but was held to only six after halftime.
Senior Brandon Walker was one of four Eagles in double digits and led the way with 19 points.
GAME 6: Bishop Gorman (Nevada) 71 Northgate 44 (National Division)
Northgate hung tough with Bishop Gorman for much of the first two quarters before an 8-0 run by the Gaels in the final two minutes gave them a 36-26 halftime lead. Bishop Gorman continued their run in the second half, extending their lead to as much as 29 points in the fourth quarter on their way to a 71-44 win over previously unbeaten Northgate.
Seniors Ryan Abelman and Darrion Williams each had 14 points for the Gaels.
GAME 7: Coronado (Nevada) 59 Clayton Valley Charter 53 (National Division)
Mason Bamberger hits a three-pointer just before the first quarter buzzer to give Clayton Valley Charter 17-14 lead. Coronado bounced back immediately, winning the second quarter 21-7 behind 15 points from Texas Tech-signee Richard Isaacs.
The Cougars led by 13 points heading into the final quarter but were put to the test after three straight three-pointers from Jake King cut the lead to five points. Despite three missed free throws in the final couple minutes for Clayton Valley Charter, the Ugly Eagles were able to cut the lead to three points until Isaacs knocked down his seventh three-pointer of the night with 13 seconds left to play, sealing the win for the Cougars.
“That was the first time our team really stayed calm under the pressure all year,” Isaacs said. “Usually when teams make runs, we fold so it was good to see us keep our composure and come out with a dub.”
Isaacs and the Cougars remain in the winner’s bracket with the victory and will be back in action on Wednesday night against Faith Family Academy in one of two National Division semifinal games.
The Cougars are familiar with Faith Family Academy, having lost to them by four points in the Tarkanian Classic on December 18th.
“We wanted to continue that momentum and we wanted a chance to face the team that we’d already lost to, Faith Family (Academy), tomorrow in the semifinals so we’re excited for that,” Isaacs said after scoring a game-high 31 points.
