CARMEL VALLEY, Calif. -- Fresh off of Friday's 10-1 win in the Kendra Couch Classic Championship, the Torrey Pines offense kept up their hot hitting on Monday and got an excellent start from senior Eric Van Valkenburg to beat visiting Santa Fe Christian, 10-0.
The Falcons started the scoring in the third inning with a sacrifice fly from Junior Barajas before Brandon Choy followed with the first of his two doubles on the day that scored Ryan Jackel. The Falcons added their third run in the fourth inning when Ryan Jackel sprinted home from third base beating Santa Fe Christian's throw.
Torrey Pines broke things open in the bottom of the sixth inning when leadoff hitter Thomas Maher stepped up with nobody out and the bases loaded with Falcons. Maher took the 2-0 offering and launched the pitch over the wall for a grand slam. The Falcons added two more runs later in the inning to reach double digits.
Senior right-hander Eric Van Valkenburg, who's signed with Oklahoma, tossed five shutout innings allowing two hits and striking out nine. He handed the ball to junior Chase Blease who threw two perfect innings of his own, striking out three to finish out the victory.
