Senior writer, Sports Illustrated
Pete Thamel is a senior writer for Sports Illustrated , where he covers college football and basketball. Thamel previously covered national college sports for The New York Times for nine years and has reported stories everywhere from Maui to Istanbul to Beijing.
In 2006 The New York Times nominated Thamel for a Pulitzer Prize for national reporting for his work uncovering diploma mills that were giving fast and easy grades to talented high school prospects. He won the Northeastern University Excellence in Sports Journalism award, which honors reporting that enhances understanding of sports in our culture.
Thamel is a 1999 graduate of Syracuse University, where he served as sports editor of The Daily Orange for three years. He also covered college basketball for The Post-Standard in Syracuse and for ESPN. Thamel is on the board of Play Ball!, a Boston-based charity that funds sports at junior high schools in inner-city Boston.
