Serena Williams defeated Vitalia Diatchenko in the first round of the U.S. Open on Monday after Diatchenko retired in the second set with an injury.
Williams quickly won the first set 6-0 and was up 2-0 in the second set when Diatchenko was forced to retire due to injury.
Williams is aiming to win her fourth straight U.S. Open title and her fifth straight Grand Slam. She could become the first player since Steffi Graf in 1988 to win the calendar Grand Slam, and she's also looking to tie Graf's professional-era record of 22 Grand Slam singles titles.
Williams is 49-2 in 2015, with a tour-leading five titles.
