Scheidt, Prada lead after 1st day of Star regatta

NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) Defending champion Robert Scheidt of Brazil rebounded from seventh in the opening race to finishing first and second in the next two races to take the lead after the opening day of the second Star Sailors League Finals.

Scheidt, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, and crewman Bruno Prada lead Mark Mendelblatt and Brian Fatih of the United States by one point.

Mendelblatt and Fatih won Wednesday's opening race and then finished 10th and third. Crews will be able to discard their worst finish.

Freddy Loof, the 2012 Star Olympic gold medalist, and Anders Ekstrom were among three crews tied for third.

Just three points separate third from ninth place.

Nine qualifying races are scheduled for three days, with a progressive elimination leading to the finals on Saturday.
