Alabama Freshman Safety Undergoing Surgery Following Practice Injury

Alabama safety Jireh Edwards will undergo surgery for a right arm injury he suffered during Monday's practice, per Yea Alabama, UA's NIL collective. It is not expected to be a season-ending setback.

Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer was asked on Monday about multiple injured players, including wide receivers Noah Rogers and Lotzeir Brooks, running back EJ Crowell and defensive lineman Jeremiah Beaman, but he did not mention the standout freshman's setback.

Edwards was a 5-star recruit and the No. 2 safety in the Class of 2026 out of Upper Marlboro, Md. He enrolled early and has imposing size for the secondary, making him an ideal Husky in the Alabama defense. Edwards is instinctual and has elite athleticism, making him an exciting prospect to watch.

"Jireh is one of the most instinctive playmakers I've ever seen coming out of high school," Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack said on Aug. 18. "Very physical. He's got phenomenal tracking of the ball. His blitz IQ and awareness is really high, and so he can create production out of that package as well.

"But really for him, it's about putting the whole thing together. Jireh's going to play for us, but how much does he play for us early in the season and in what situations? Those are the question marks that we've kind of challenged him. Can you put everything together that we can throw you out there on any given down, and he's still working towards that."

BamaCentral asked numerous Alabama players to name a sleeper on the roster, and safety Ivan Taylor didn't even hesitate to say Edwards.

"[Edwards] is coming up," Taylor said. He's hungry, he's starving. He's really been playing very well during camp, and he'll continue to do well."

Edwards is the second freshman defensive back expected to be sidelined for a bit, as it was revealed on Aug. 14 that Jorden Edmonds is expected to miss at least a few weeks with a lower-body injury.

Edmonds, listed at 6-foot-3, 190 pounds, was considered the No. 3 cornerback and the No. 20 overall player in the Class of 2026 out of Sprayberry High School in Marietta, Ga. He recorded 35 tackles with three pass breakups, while adding 35 receptions for 670 yards and four touchdowns as a senior.

In terms of depth, losing Edwards and Edmonds is not the end of the world for the Alabama safeties. Bray Hubbard and Keon Sabb are the starters, and their All-SEC expectations will keep them locked on the field for a large majority of each game, and the same is said for Husky Red Morgan. Ivan Taylor, Dre Kirkpatrick Jr. and Zavier Mincey are each very capable backups.
