Falcons QB Coach: 'High Expectations' for Desmond Ridder, Marcus Mariota

The two QBs just got their camp battle rolling in Georgia.

CINCINNATI — The Atlanta Falcons wrapped up their first day of Training Camp yesterday, and quarterbacks coach Charles London made it clear he has "high expectations" for his QBs.

He talked with a team reporter after the practice, speaking about the 12-13 installs he knew the two had to have down to not lose any ground at the start of camp.

"We put a lot on Marcus' plate. We put a lot on Desmond's plate," London said as he confirmed that Mariota is the starter. "I don't think you can ever baby the quarterback. We put a lot on them, and we have high expectations for them."

While confirming Mariota as the starter, London also said Ridder's been a pleasant surprise in how quickly he's acclimated to the playbook. Ridder himself knows he is at an experience disadvantage given Mariota played under head coach Arthur Smith in Tennessee.

"Marcus has been in Coach's Smith system before," Ridder said, "so he knows a lot more. I am really trying to learn from him, and learn about how he goes about learning the game plan and learning how we do things each and every week."

There is a long way to go in Flowery Branch, but for now, Ridder is the clear backup in Atlanta as the Falcons try to see what type of magic Mariota can still muster.
