LSU QB Max Johnson Enters Transfer Portal, Bearcats Have Options for Next era

Johnson finished 15th nationally with 27 touchdown passes.

CINCINNATI — The Bearcats have plenty of options if they want to dive into the transfer portal for their next quarterback. Luke Fickell and company already patched up the kicking game with that tool, and they could dive back in for a QB if they aren't sold on redshirt freshman Evan Prater.

LSU quarterback Max Johnson recently announced he is entering the portal. The sophomore passed for 2,815 yards, 27 touchdowns, and six interceptions this season. His 27 touchdown passes ranked 15th nationally.

Johnson joins other names like Spencer Rattler, Dillon Gabriel, Myles Brennan, Michael Penix Jr., Jake Haener, and Jack Sears as quarterbacks who've entered the transfer portal.

That doesn't include five-star passer Quinn Ewers who most analysts expect to transfer into his home state of Texas after C.J. Stroud proved worthy as Ohio State's starting quarterback.

Prater is on track to take the reins next season after redshirting in 2020 and being named Ohio's Mr. Football at Wyoming High School in 2019. The 6-foot-4, 200-pound thrower appeared in five regular-season games this season. Prater finished 5-for-11 passing with 38 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. He totaled 105 yards rushing, and two touchdowns on 12 carries this season.
