Clemson Wide Receiver E.J. Williams Transfers to Indiana

Indiana football landed wide receiver transfer E.J. Williams, a former top-100 recruit from Phenix City, Ala. who spent the last three seasons at Clemson.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana made an addition to its wide receiver room on Friday. After spending three seasons at Clemson, E.J. Williams announced he is transferring to Indiana. 

Williams is a 6-foot-3, 190-pound wide receiver with two years of remaining eligibility. He started four games and appeared in all 12 for Clemson as a freshman in 2020, catching 24 passes for 306 yards and two touchdowns. In Clemson's ACC Championship victory over Notre Dame in 2020, Williams made an impressive one-handed catch along the sideline. 

Across his sophomore and junior seasons, Williams' regressed from a statistical perspective, hauling in nine receptions for 66 yards in eight games in 2021 and catching seven passes for 70 yards in 13 games in 2022. 

Williams committed to Clemson out of Central High School in Phenix City, Ala., where he played for coach Jamey DuBose in the state's largest classification. During his junior and senior seasons, he made 84 catches for 1,407 yards and 19 touchdowns. 

Following his senior year, Williams was selected to the Under Armour All-American game. He was also named MVP for the Alabama team in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star game with six catches for 98 yards. 

247Sports rated Williams as a four-star prospect, the No. 3 player in Alabama and the No. 81 player in the nation for the class of 2020. He chose to attend Clemson over offers from 12 SEC schools, as well as Florida State, Oklahoma, Oregon and others. 

Williams joins an Indiana receiving corps loaded with transfers. Junior college transfer Cam Camper had a breakout 2022 season for Indiana, leading the Hoosiers 46 receptions, 569 yards and two touchdowns before tearing his ACL in Week 8 at Rutgers. Emery Simmons (North Carolina) and Andison Coby (Tennessee) transferred to Indiana before the 2022 season and finished second and fourth on the team in receiving yards, respectively. 

Indiana also lost D.J. Matthews to graduation and Malachi Holt-Bennett and Javon Swinton to the transfer portal. Donaven McCulley enters his third season at Indiana in 2023 and second as a wide receiver after playing quarterback his freshman year. McCulley caught 16 passes for 169 yards and one touchdown in 2022. Indiana coaches have also expressed optimism over Omar Cooper Jr. and Kamryn Perry, who redshirted the 2022 season as freshmen.
