SEC Tournament Preview: South Carolina Vs Ole Miss

As we head into the SEC Men's Basketball Tournament, it is time to preview South Carolina's first round matchup against Ole Miss.

Though not where many fans would have hoped the team to be at the beginning of the year, South Carolina will begin the SEC Tournament both as the 12th seed and with an optimistic mindset, as they will face the 13th-seeded Ole Miss Rebels. From a record standpoint, the matchup looks split between the two.

The two teams finished the regular season with an 11-20 record and split their season series 1-1. One interesting thing to look at between the two teams is their respective road records, as South Carolina faired 4-8 on the road, while Ole miss' was just 2-9 outside of Oxford. While not a huge discrepancy, the differences in road records could be indicative as to how each team might perform in the SEC tourney, where all the games will be taking place in Nashville.

Ole Miss dropped their last two games against Texas A&M and Missouri, both of which are ranked in the top 25, but remained competitive in both contests, losing each game by eight points or less. In contrast, South Carolina managed to end their season with a big win against Georgia, playing some of their cleanest basketball of the season throughout the game, resembling the team the fanbase hoped they would become.

Matthew Murrell has been the Rebels leading score this year with 14.9 points a game, and had his best game of the year against the Gamecocks in the first of their two matchups, nearly posting a triple-double with 23 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists. Throughout the regular season, however, Murrell has struggled with his shot efficiency, finishing with a 37.2% field goal percentage.

GG Jackson's season has been volatile, and so have his performances against Ole Miss, as he dropped 15 points and seven rebounds in one contest against the Rebels, but posted just five points and one rebound in the other. Though Jackson's past few weeks have been up and down, the Gamecocks seemed more focused on playing team basketball last Saturday, something they could hopefully carryover into the tournament. Both teams are looking to deal some damage, and can be dangerous when utilizing their star power correctly, so look for big games from Jackson and Murrell.
