Staff Predictions: South Carolina vs. Tennessee

Big games define your program, and South Carolina has one against Tennessee. The stars will be out for an SEC showdown, and the staff picks are in.

Negativity is swirling in Columbia as the Gamecocks have fallen short of midseason expectations. Many speculated they could be 8-2 entering this game but are currently 6-4.

While the second season under head coach Shane Beamer should be defined as a success, there's still a ways to go. Meanwhile, Tennessee has had a historic season for its standards and is vying for a CFP bid.

The coaching staff is banking a lot on a competitive performance. They have major recruits in attendance, and Williams-Brice Stadium should be rocking for another night kickoff. However, our staff sees this one going Tennessee's way.

South Carolina is overmatched here. The Volunteers have NFL talent all over their offense, while South Carolina is still trying to configure a consistent defense.

The Gamecocks have repeatedly shown us they don't have the offensive makeup to compete in these games. While that isn't a criticism, it's the reality, and I see the Vols running away with this one.

Andrew Lyon: Tennessee 59, South Carolina 17

This is a nightmare matchup for the Gamecocks for the second straight week in a row, this time regarding how both teams start games.

So far this season, the Volunteers are scoring 21.8 points in the first half against Power 5 opponents. Subsequently, the Gamecocks are scoring 11 points on average in the first half against Power 5 opponents this season, and the defense must put recent struggles behind them to keep it competitive.

I can't envision a scenario where this happens, as the Volunteers will pull away early, and the Gamecocks will not be able to play catch up.

Christian Dart: Tennessee 45, South Carolina 28

I think this team will be close through the first half. The Gamecocks might even jump to an early lead, thanks to a couple of big plays from special teams. The defense will also get a few stops in the first half, disrupting the Volunteers' offensive pace.

The Volunteers' offense is too talented to be contained for a whole game, though, and they will come alive in the second half. Expect quarterback Hendon Hooker to have a big second half, throwing for at least a few scores.
