Quick Hits: Jyron Hughley's Development, Competition in Secondary, Slot Options + More

The Mountaineers are barreling through Week 2 of camp and will hold their first scrimmage on Saturday. Head coach Rich Rodriguez gave an update on the competition at multiple spots in today's press conference.

Guys in the mix at safety

“At the true safety spots, it’s a lot of new guys. We got Kamari Wilson, who’s got some experience, has played pretty well. Matt Sieg, who is going to have a great future here. Da’Mare Williams, Jacob Bradford, they’re both transfers. Tim Roberson is a transfer. Kam Reddic is a transfer. And Andrew Powdrell is going to have an outstanding year. He’s a veteran guy that really had a great spring. He’s been a little limited in the beginning of camp, but he’ll be full go here in a couple days.”

Guys fighting for time at corner

“Veteran coming back that’s played in our system, Nick Taylor, Keyshawn Robinson. They’re battling with Chams Diange, who’s a transfer, big guy. ChaMarryus Bomar is another guy that’s got some experience in our system. Jaire Rawlison has flashed. He flashed some stuff today. DayDay Allen is another transfer that’s shown some good stuff. And then there’s a really good young class — Makhi Boone, Vincent Smith, Simaj Hill — those guys all are young guys that have multiple years left, and I think are all going to be good players for us. Reyshawn Reynolds is another guy we brought in that I think is going to have a good season for us.”

If freshman QB Jyron Hughley is getting to the point he could play

“Yeah, there’s no more redshirting anyway, but he’s a guy that would need some scrimmage time because everything’s happening a little bit faster for him. He’s a very talented guy, very conscientious. I think he’s got great things ahead of him.”

If the team is where he’d like for them to be at this point

“I was just trying to think about it myself. I was looking at our scripts from last year and this year and how we’re practicing, what we’re doing each period. I’m also trying to think, ‘Where were we at?’ Was I happy one week in? I don’t think I’ve ever been happy in 29 years one week in, two weeks in, four weeks in. If I look back at my notes like, ‘Man, I’m ticked off after week one because we hadn’t made more progress, that would probably the same thing I said 29 other times. I’d like to be further along right now, but if I looked at my notes, we’re probably further along than we were in the past. In fact, I know we are, so I can’t complain.”

How good is Kamari Wilson?

“Kamari is going to be a really good player. He’s one of those guys that’s got a lot of experience. He’s played really good football. It’s been a seamless transition for him here. It feels like he’s been around forever because he’s got a great personality and guys gravitate to him. I’ve been really pleased with how he’s played since he’s been here.”

Inside receivers

“DJ Epps is a really good player. Another guy that was highly productive where he was at. He’s had excellent practices all during camp. Armoni Weaver is one of the fastest guys on the team, and he’s doing some really good stuff. Kedrick Triplett is a junior college guy that’s slowly getting better. You could see at the beginning of it he was kind of wide-eyed and all new to him, but he’s been doing good. DJ’s the leader in that group. I think Armoni’s going to play a lot of football for us, and we’ve got a couple of guys like Jaden Bray and John Neider who will play both outside and inside. Cyrus Traugh can play both.”
