The Arizona Diamondbacks and Detroit Tigers faced off on Tuesday night and the contest made a bit of Major League Baseball history.

Diamondbacks prospect José Fernández made his big league debut and certainly didn't disappoint. Fernández is ranked as the No. 27 prospect in the Diamondbacks' farm system by MLB.com and yet he did something on Tuesday that just seven others in Major League Baseball history have been able to accomplish.

MLB's Sarah Langs shared on X that Fernández became just the eighth player in big league history to launch two or more homers in their first regular season game joining: Chase DeLauter, Trevor Story, J.P. Arencibia, Mark Quinn, Bert Campaneris, Bob Nieman and Charlie Reilly.

The Diamondbacks slugger made MLB history in his first game

"José Fernández is the 8th player in MLB history with two home runs in his first regular-season game, joining," Langs wrote. "3/26/26 Chase DeLauter, 4/4/16 Trevor Story, 8/7/10 J.P. Arencibia, 9/14/99 Mark Quinn, 7/23/64 Bert Campaneris, 9/14/51 Bob Nieman and 10/9/1889 Charlie Reilly."

One thing that is true about Major League Baseball is the fact that you're always going to be seeing something new each and every season. It's part of the reason why baseball is the best. In this scenario, we're talking about a 22-year-old infield prospect who isn't even a top-25 prospect for his club. But he's in the big leagues now and launched two homers in just his first game. That's obviously not common. Overall, he went 3-for-4 in his big league debut with the two homers and four RBIs.

Over the course of the season, we're going to see obscure history like this all the time. But that doesn't make it any less special. When you have this much data, something new happens all the time. For example, the New York Yankees have allowed just three runs so far this season in five games, which is the fewest since 1943. Shohei Ohtani is leading the league with the longest active on-base streak (36 games) and the longest active scoreless inning streak (22 2/3 innings pitched). That's insane.

Major League Baseball is the best and what Fernández was able to do on Tuesday night is a perfect example of why. You can quickly go from someone who isn't a household name to Major League Baseball history in just one game. There are just seven other players in league history who were able to do what Fernández did on Tuesday. The Shohei Ohtanis and Aaron Judges of the world didn't accomplish the feat. But, Fernández did.
