In this story:

Major League Baseball hasn't seen a player quite like Shohei Ohtani.

Of course, there have been comparisons to Babe Ruth and the idea makes sense. Ruth obviously began his big league career as a starter and had success before becoming one of, if not the greatest slugger in MLB history. Hank Aaron and Barry Bonds would also like a word on that front as the greatest sluggers ever. But when it comes to Ruth, this is a guy who hit 20 total homers across his first five big league seasons while also logging a 2.09 ERA in 141 total appearances on the mound, including 128 starts.

Ohtani is the closest player to Ruth. He's a unicorn and has had success both on the mound, and at the plate at the same time. Which is something no one has consistently done in league history. Offensively, it's been a bit of a slow start for Ohtani as he's slashing .200/.455/.200 without a homer or RBI in five games, but he is leading the league with six walks. He's getting on base. In fact, he's gotten on base each game so far this season. Ohtani made his first start of the season on Tuesday and unsurprisingly was brilliant. The Los Angeles Dodgers superstar pitched six shutout innings against the Cleveland Guardians and allowed just one base hit while striking out six batters. What he's doing is insane.

MLB's Sarah Langs shared on X that Ohtani is leading baseball with the longest active on-base streak as well as the longest active scoreless innings streak.

"Shohei Ohtani currently has: The longest active on-base streak in MLB (36 games)," Langs wrote. "The longest active scoreless inning streak in MLB (22 2/3 IP)."

Again, no one is doing what Ohtani is doing in baseball. This is a guy who is playing at the highest level in Major League Baseball and has an argument to be the best offensive player and is at least among the best pitchers in the game when healthy. Ohtani has a 2.96 career ERA in 101 total starts in the majors. In 2025, he made 14 starts and had a 2.87 ERA after not pitching in 2024. Back in 2022, Ohtani was healthy the entire season and had a 2.33 ERA in 28 starts. He followed with a 3.14 ERA in 23 starts in 2023.

If he can stay healthy in 2026, there's a real chance that we're looking at a Most Valuable Player candidate as well as a Cy Young Award candidate. That's how good he is. Again, no one in Major League Baseball is doing what he is doing. Having the longest active on-base streak and longest active scoreless innings streak at the same time has got to be some sort of record in itself. Ohtani is a unicorn and he continues to find new ways to show that fact.
