BREAKING: Derrick Lewis Arrested Ahead Of UFC Fight Night Main Event

Lewis is scheduled to headline this weekend's UFC Fight Night card.

Top heavyweight Derrick Lewis was reportedly arrested in Houston less than two weeks out from his UFC Fight Night main event bout in São Paulo.

“The Black Beast” recently got back into the win column when he finished Marcos Rogério de Lima in just 33 seconds at UFC 291 in July. That result snapped a three-fight losing streak that began when he was stopped by Tai Tuivasa last year before he was also finished by Sergei Pavlovich and Serghei Spivac.

Lewis’ victory over de Lima earned him a new contract with the UFC, and when Curtis Blaydes pulled out of a headlining bout against Jailton Almeida scheduled for November 4, the promotion manage to convince the former heavyweight title challenger to step in.

Derrick Lewis

Lewis snapped a three-fight losing streak in July.

According to the report from ABC 13 on October 31, Lewis was arrested less than two weeks before his fight with Almeida for allegedly driving at 136 mph in a 50 mph zone in Houston.

The report from ABC 13 also reveals that Lewis was released the same day he was arrested for reckless driving on a $100 personal recognizance bond and is scheduled to appear in court on December 27.

Jailton Almeida

Lewis is scheduled to fight Jailton Almeida this Saturday.

Driving well over twice the posted speed limit is certainly a bad look for “The Black Beast”, but for the moment it doesn’t appear his arrest will keep him from traveling to Brazil to face Almeida this weekend.

If the arrest is weighing on Lewis’ mind at all once he enters the cage in São Paulo the 38-year-old could be in for a difficult night. Almeida is unbeaten since joining the UFC and is currently the promotion’s #9-ranked heavyweight, which is one spot ahead of Lewis.
