JJ Redick Wearing Hat on a Podcast Becomes Multi-Day Story

Colin Cowherd saw the footage and had thoughts.

Colin Cowherd may have an actual problem with humans who wear their baseball hats backwards or he's realized that he can build a pretty solid bit around the idea that he does. If pressed, it's probably a combination of the two things. It's been Hat o'clock around FS1 studios this week as Cowherd reacted to JJ Redick wearing a backward hat on the video feed of the podcast he does with LeBron James after he was connected to the open Los Angeles Lakers coaching job.

"I didn't hear a word LeBron said," Cowherd said. "I couldn't stop staring at the hat."

It cannot be stated enough that this is just a few minutes of the 15 hours of live television Cowherd has to do per week and his long, Baker Mayfield-heavy history of producing content around snapbacks in the front almost forced his hand here. Anyone who managed to get themselves upset by the segment is a mark but it's worth noting that both Redick and James responded to the resulting social media clip.

Look at all these embeds! That's how you know you're reading a post in 2024. Just an endless cycle of people responding to the responses to the original stimuli. And we're not done with them because Cowherd continued to opine on the subject on his show on Thursday.

Now, if you look hard enough you can see a host trying very hard not to crack a smirk so mileage may vary on how much stock to put in any of the take. Still the last line "To turn your life around, you have to first turn your hat around," is inspired. Credit where it's due. That mantra would look great on a throw pillow or frame above a boomer's basement bar.

The thing is β€” and it's incredibly obvious β€”Β is that Redick doesn't need to turn his life around. Cowherd is building off content created with LeBron James and using it as a springboard to explain why the player-turned-pundit shouldn't get one of the most high-profile coaching jobs in all of sports. Redick is doing just fine, thank you. And so is Cowherd, knowing he can dip into the well and bring this type of silliness to the surface, collecting attention along the way.

Whomever the Lakers choose to be their next coach won't be wearing a cap on the sidelines anyway so all of this is a moot point. If there's even a point to begin with.
