Diamondbacks OF A.J. Pollock expected to miss at least two months with broken hand

Injuries are always unfair, but there's a special lack of justice when an injury robs a player of a breakout season. Such is the case with Arizona's A.J. Pollock.
The Diamondbacks announced on Monday that Pollock underwent successful surgery to repair a broken hand suffered when he was hit by a Johnny Cueto fastball. The pitch ran inside and Pollock attempted to check his swing, but it caught him square on the front of his right hand. The team said the outfielder was tentatively scheduled to resume baseball activities in eight weeks, which would be the beginning of August.
The 26-year-old Pollock was enjoying a career year, hitting .316/.366/.554 with six homers and eight steals in 192 plate appearances. He had once been considered a major part of the team's future, but scuffled during his brief time in the majors after first being promoted in 2012, then hit .269 with an unimpressive .631 OPS last year. In the opening third of the 2014 season, however, he was one of the lone bright spots for an Arizona team that is 23-36 -- the second-worst record in the majors -- entering play Monday.
