Yankees catching prospect Luis Torrens out for 2015 season

New York Yankees catching prospect Luis Torrens will undergo surgery on Wednesday to repair a torn labrum in his right throwing shoulder and will miss the entire 2015 season, the team announced Tuesday

Torrens, who turns 19 in May, was signed as an amateur free agent in July 2012 for a reported $1.3 million signing bonus. Baseball Americaranked him as the Yankees' No. 9 prospect this season.

Torrens has played in 107 professional games, with a .249 batting average and four home runs. Scouts are impressed by his defensive ability behind the plate.

Torrens is one of three highly regarded Yankees catching prospects. J.R. Murphy, a 23-year-old who batted .284 in 32 MLB games last season, and Gary SanchezBaseball America's No. 5 prospect in the Yankees' system, are also top prospects.
