Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer will not start Game 5 of the World Series on Sunday night due to back and neck spasms, manager Dave Martinez told reporters. Joe Ross will take the mound in his place.

Scherzer woke up with back and neck spasms on Sunday morning.

"For Max to miss a game, especially a significant game like this, he's got to be really hurting," Martinez said.

"I've never seen Max this quiet," he added.

Scherzer worked five innings and struck out seven hitters but also walking three in Game 1.

The World Series is tied 2–2. Houston won Game 4 on Saturday night 8–1.

The Nationals' plan is still for Stephen Strasburg to pitch in Game 6, according to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal. Scherzer would be questionable to start Game 7.
