At Memorial Stadium, 27-year-old Senator pitcher Tom Cheney sets a major league mark for strikeouts in a single game by striking out 21 batters in complete-game 16 inning, 2-1 victory over the Orioles.

At age 53, Minnie Minoso becomes the oldest player to get a hit in a regular season game as he singles in three at-bats as the designated hitter for White Sox.
1979
Ann Meyers (pictured here with Tara Kirk in 2004) is cut by the Pacers. Only months before, Meyers made headlines when she became the first and only woman signed to an NBA contract.
1984
Dwight Gooden breaks the season strikeout record for a rookie by whiffing 16 Pirates. Gooden's total of 251 is six more than Herb Score's 1955 mark.
1986
Twins name Tom Kelly manager after the squad fires Ray Miller. Kelly would remain the Twins' skipper through 2001, compiling a 1140-1241 record with two World Series victories.
