In a 2-1 loss to the A's, White Sox hurler Hoyt Wilhelm breaks Cy Young's record as he makes his 907th career appearance.

George Brett

George Brett's ninth inning homer, which puts the Royals ahead, is disallowed as the umpires rule the third baseman used too much pine tar on his bat. American League president Lee McPhail will overrule the decision and on August 18th the game resumes with the Royals beating the Yankees, 4-3.

Vince Coleman injures three fans when he throws cherry bomb out the window of a car in the players' parking lot at Dodger Stadium.
