Many NBA players may agree that the New Jersey Nets forthcoming move to Brooklyn would entice them to give greater consideration to signing with the team as a free agent. Shaquille O'Neal, for one, doesn't even need to wait for Brooklyn. Shaq is intrigued by the possibility of joining New Jersey in part because of the team's move to the Prudential Center beginning next season. For his part, Shaq told reporters after Cleveland's playoff exiting loss that he hopes the Nets stay in the Newark arena forever. It's doubtful that the new Nets ownership feels the same way. Griffey 'cooked,' should retire
Whether Ken Griffey Jr. was napping in the Mariners clubhouse is of less consequence than the fact he should call it a career. Now it is time for the greatest outfielder since Mays -- a more graceful, economical, athlete than even Willie, some feel -- to call a press conference and say grateful, gracious things. Including goodbye. ... [Even] if Griffey was sleepless in Seattle, there is hard evidence Junior is cooked. He needs to move on with dignity and pride in his amazing accomplishments. His job possibly threatened by new talent, Will Allen, coming off surgery to repair a torn ACL, might be willing to move to free safety. "I think I'm right where I need to be," said Allen. "I'll be ready to go when the time comes. I'm going to try and do a little bit. We'll see what happens." And if Tony Sparano came to him and asked this proud veteran to move inside and learn a new position for the good of the team? "I just like playing football, man," Allen said.
