Willie Colon, Mike Goodson sign with New York Jets

The New York Jets have a lot of work to do in order to be competitive next season. They took a couple of tiny steps in that direction Friday, landing running back Mike Goodson and offensive lineman Willie Colon. Goodson's deal was worth $6.9 million over three years, while Colon received $1.2 million for one year.

It's been a tough offseason thus far for the Jets, with a number of key players departing via free agency. Both the Goodson and Colon moves, though, appear to be smart and cost-effective additions.

Goodson may simply need a chance in someone's backfield. He was a backup in Carolina from 2009-2011 (though he did accumulate 1,034 kickoff-return yards in '10) and saw all of 35 carries for the Raiders last season. He does have career 4.5 yards-per-carry and 8.9 yards-per-reception averages.

The Jets need some backfield help, too, with Shonn Greene leaving for the Tennessee Titans. Goodson should get into the mix, along with Joe McKnight and Bilal Powell.

Colon has dealt with injuries over the past two seasons (12 starts in 2012, just one in 2011), but he is capable of playing tackle or guard and, for a mere $1.2 million, certainly counts as a bargain-bin score for the Jets.

With D'Brickashaw Ferguson and Austin Howard penciled in as the starting tackles, Colon should have every shot to take over a guard position in New York.

Grade for Goodson signing: B-plus. The money's reasonable and Goodson could develop into a breakout start.
