Way-Too-Early Depth Charts: Projecting the Panthers' 2021 FS Order

Taking a look at how the free safety spot may shake out for the Carolina Panthers this season.

Over the course of the next few weeks, we will be taking a look at each position group and giving our way-too-early depth chart projections. Today, we move on to the free safeties.

Starter - Juston Burris

It is very critical for the Panthers that Juston Burris not only produces this upcoming season but also stays healthy. Last year, he suffered a rib injury that landed him on injured reserve and forced him to miss a handful of games. The depth behind Burris is not in very good shape which means he will likely see the majority of the team's defensive snaps. He showed flashes of his potential a year ago by recording 53 tackles, four pass breakups, three tackles for loss, and one interception.

Backup - Delano Hill

Hill was drafted in the 3rd round by the Seattle Seahawks back in 2017 out of Michigan and played a limited role on the Seattle defense over the last four years. He spent the majority of his reps on special teams but with the lack of depth that Carolina has at safety, he will have every opportunity to earn a solidified role on Phil Snow's defense.

3rd string - Sean Chandler

Chandler has played 32 games in his short three-year career (all with Giants), playing a large percentage of those snaps on special teams. The most defensive snaps he played in a single season were 141, which was back in his rookie campaign in 2018. He finished the season with 18 tackles, two QB hits, one tackle for loss, one fumble recovery, and one pass breakup. He's a quality special teams player and will likely serve in a similar role with the Carolina Panthers.
