Brandon McCarthy injury update: A's RHP had surgery for skull fracture

Well, so much for the initial report that Oakland A's righthander Brandon McCarthy was "doing well." The team announced Thursday evening that McCarthy underwent surgery on Wednesday night after he had been struck on the right side of his head by a line drive off the bat of the Los Angeles Angels' Erick Aybar.

McCarthy is 8-6 with a 3.24 ERA this season in 18 starts. ESPN The Magazine recently anointed him "one of the best pitchers in baseball."
