The Philadelphia Phillies have designated slumping outfielder Delmon Young for assignment, according to multiple media reports. They will have 10 days to trade or release the 27-year-old.

The move comes with Young on the verge of a bonus. Young, who has made 291 plate appearances this year, would receive a $150,000 bonus upon reaching 300 plate appearances.

The Phillies announced yesterday they had claimed journeyman outfielder Casper Wells off of waivers from the White Sox. Wells will take Young's spot on the 25-man roster.

The No. 1 overall pick by Tampa Bay in 2003, Young has a career slash line of .283/.316/.423.  He spent four seasons with the Minnesota Twins and two with the Detroit Tigers. As a member of the Tigers, he was named the 2012 ALCS MVP for hitting .353 with six RBIs against the Yankees. In the ensuing World Series against San Francisco, Young hit for a .357 average.

Young started off his first season in Philly poorly, hitting .167 in May. He then heated up, with a .307 and .284 average in June and July, respectively, before falling into his most recent slump -- .194 in his last 10 games (6-for-31).
