The 49ers placed wide receivers Michael Crabtree and Mario Manningham on the Physically Unable to Perform list on Tuesday. Crabtree is rehabbing from Achilles surgery, while Manningham is still recovering from an ACL and PCL injury from last season.

Crabtree is expected to miss more than the PUP list's six-week window, if not the entire regular season. The 49ers' best hope may be getting him back in time for the playoffs.

With Manningham out at least the first six weeks of the regular season, the 49ers are thin at receiver. Off-season trade acquisition Anquan Bolden is No. 1 on the depth chart, followed by less accomplished veterans such as Jon Baldwin, Austin Collie and Lavelle Hawkins, plus rookie Quinton Patton. The 49ers also dabbled with tight end Vernon Davis playing receiver in minicamp.
