Inter defender Christian Chivu can return to smiling again, after being released from the hospital a few hours ago, according to Novantesimo.it. The Romanian international was involved in a sickening clash of heads with Chievo striker Sergio Pellissier on January 6, which fractured his skull.

Having been rushed to hospital immediately after the incident, the 29-year-old was operated on his right parietal region of his skull in Verona before being transferred to the Besta hospital in Milan a few days later.

It will be a long and arduous road to recovery for the stopper, which will see him miss much of the Nerazzurri's remaining campaign in the league, cup and Champions League.

Stay tuned to Goal.com as we keep track of Chivu's progress through rehabilitation.
