Injured Martins Indi stays back in Porto Alegre

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) Netherlands trained without Bruno Martins Indi on Thursday as the defender remained behind in Porto Alegre after sustaining a suspected concussion in the 3-2 win over Australia at the World Cup.

While the squad traveled back to its base in Rio de Janeiro and trained in the rain, Martins Indi stayed overnight in the hospital in Porto Alegre for observation after he was hurt in a tackle by Tim Cahill in Wednesday's Group B game. He was expected to rejoin the team later Thursday in Rio. Martins Indi left the game against Australia on a stretcher after the challenge by Cahill.

Winger Arjen Robben and midfielder Nigel de Jong also sat out the training session at Estadio Gavea, the practice facility of Rio club Flamengo and the Dutch training base for the World Cup. The pair were apparently being rested by coach Louis van Gaal and perched on plastic crates on the sidelines of a practice game.

Striker Robin van Persie took part in light warm-up drills then climbed to the top of the steep concrete stands overlooking the field to sit with his wife and young children and watch, cheering on teammates at times.

The Netherlands qualified for the last 16 with the come-from-behind win over the Aussies and will play Chile on Monday in Sao Paulo to decide who tops Group B. Both teams have won their two opening games, knocking out defending champion Spain in the process. The winner of the group will likely avoid playing host Brazil in the second round - if Brazil tops its group, as expected.

The Dutch ended their training session just in time as the steady rain turned into a heavy downpour a couple of minutes after they wrapped up.
