Sergio Ramos signs five-year extension with Real Madrid

Sergio Ramos will remain in Santiago Bernabeu for five more years.

Spanish defender Sergio Ramos has signed a five-year contract extension to remain with Real Madrid through the 2020 season, the team announced on Monday morning. 

“My idea was to always be here and I always wanted to retire here if the president would allow it, and I’m thankful I have a new challenge to be the captain of this team,” Ramos told reporters at his press conference. “The priority is always Real Madrid, keeping our fans happy and winning titles.”

Ramos, 29, drew heavy interest from Manchester United but decided to pass on a bigger contract offer to remain in the Spanish capital.

Ramos joined the club in 2005 and has recorded 40 goals for the team in those ten years. During Ramos' tenure in Madrid, the club has won three La Liga titles, one UEFA Champions League title and two Copa del Rey titles.

Ramos has also tallied 128 caps for Spain, with two European titles and the 2010 World Cup title on his resume.

Real Madrid begins its La Liga season Sunday at Sporting Gijon.
